Countertop selection and fabrication

Questions behind this page

How are countertops chosen, designed, bought, fabricated, delivered, and installed? What must be ready before templating? What finishes, seams, and overhangs should be specified?

Selection sequence

  1. Establish use, appearance, maintenance tolerance, and budget.
  2. Compare material families and actual samples.
  3. Inspect the exact slabs or approved manufactured design.
  4. Select finish, edge, sink, faucet, appliance models, and backsplash details.
  5. Confirm supports, seam positions, vein layout, and access.
  6. Complete cabinet preparation before final templating.
  7. Approve the fabrication layout, then schedule installation.
  8. Inspect the work and retain care and warranty documentation.

Before templating

The fabricator needs stable, correctly installed cabinetry and finalized openings. Changes to sink models, appliance dimensions, overhangs, or edges can alter the fabrication. Confirm their exact readiness requirements before booking.

Decision Record
Slab / color Identifier and approved layout
Finish Product-specific polished, honed, textured, or other finish
Edge Profile and actual/mitered thickness
Seams Position, appearance, and approved pattern alignment
Cutouts Final model numbers and mounting details
Support Fabricator-approved design for spans and overhangs
Installation Access, protection, tolerances, and exclusions
Care Permitted cleaners, heat guidance, maintenance

Fabrication and receiving

Fabrication turns slab stock into cut pieces, edges, and openings. Handling and installation require equipment and access planning. Coordinate delivery route, stairs, lifts, site protection, and what is included in the contract.

Stone fabrication can generate hazardous silica dust. OSHA’s countertop-fabrication guidance makes workplace controls a concrete consideration when evaluating a fabricator.

Pricing and lead time

Earlier discussions included rough installed prices and a 1–3-week fabrication interval. They are not current commitments. Obtain a scope-specific quote and schedule after material availability, templating readiness, edge complexity, and support requirements are known.
