Lighting for a long-lived building
Questions behind this page
How sustainable and long-lived is LED lighting? What industrial or architectural options suit a house intended to last 100 years?
A century-long building goal does not imply a century-long LED. Design the lighting system so components can be renewed.
Specify the replaceable parts
| Component | Question |
|---|---|
| Housing | Can it remain in place when electronics fail? |
| Light source / module | Is replacement documented and accessible? |
| Driver | Can it be replaced without opening finished construction? |
| Wiring | Can circuits and connections be reached and identified? |
| Controls | Can a failed or obsolete control be replaced independently? |
| Optical parts | Can lenses, seals, and reflectors be cleaned or renewed? |
Rated life, warranty period, and actual system life are different measures. A useful specification includes conditions of use, service procedure, and spare-part strategy.
Architectural versus consumer fixtures
A product marketed as architectural or industrial is not automatically more repairable. Ask for an exploded view, installation instructions, replacement-part information, and the procedure for replacing a driver or module.
Earlier answers mentioned Xicato, Ecosense, ERCO, BEGA, BK Lighting, and other manufacturers as research leads. No specific model was selected or verified for current availability; evaluate actual products before treating a brand as a recommendation.
