Cabinet and furniture plywood

Questions behind this page

How does cabinet plywood differ from other plywood? What do sheets cost, how difficult is it to work, and where can maple plywood be bought around Pasadena? Can a CNC machine be used to make cabinets?

Specify the panel, not just the face species

“Maple plywood” identifies a visible veneer, not the complete panel. Two maple-faced sheets can have different cores, thicknesses, face grades, finishes, and intended uses.

Structural plywood is specified for structural performance; decorative hardwood plywood is selected for furniture and cabinetry requirements. Smooth appearance does not establish a structural rating (APA plywood overview).

Panel or core Useful characteristic Check before buying
Veneer core Layered wood construction Voids, flatness, thickness variation, screw locations
MDF core Uniform surface for decorative faces Weight, moisture exposure, and fastening details
Particleboard core Consistent panel surface Hardware anchorage, weight, and moisture limitations
Combination core Balances veneer and fiberboard layers Exact construction and machining behavior
Baltic-birch-style panel Often selected for visible edges Actual ply quality, origin, dimensions, and grade

Manufacturers offer several distinct core systems; Columbia’s panel range, MDF panels, and core guide illustrate why the full specification matters. “Cabinet grade” should not substitute for those details.

Working with it

Plywood is well suited to repeatable cabinet parts, but thin decorative veneers limit sanding tolerance. Plan finished edges before cutting: exposed plywood, edge banding, and solid edging produce different appearances and construction details.

Use a sample panel to test cutting, routing, drilling, finishing, and hardware attachment. A CNC machine improves repetition; it does not resolve joinery, assembly, finishing, or installation.

Buying and cost

Request quotes by species, core, grade, measured thickness, sheet dimensions, finish, and quantity. Compare price per usable area, including delivery and cutting waste. Earlier per-sheet estimates are not current quotes.

The Pasadena maple-plywood sourcing question remains open: verify stock and panel specifications with the supplier before naming a source as available.
