Barefoot-friendly gravel
Questions and preferences
The earlier question sought smooth or polished gravel that feels good barefoot for a 30 × 12 ft area: 360 sq ft. Barefoot comfort is a requirement; a product that only looks rounded is not sufficient.
Compare shape, size, and movement
| Option explored | What to test |
|---|---|
| Rounded pea gravel | Pressure underfoot, shifting, tracking into other areas |
| Tumbled small pebbles | Consistency of size and smoothness |
| Beach pebbles | Whether larger stones feel unstable or uncomfortable |
| Resin-bound aggregate | Actual texture, drainage system, aging, and repair |
The earlier answer suggested approximately ⅜-inch rounded material as a starting point. Treat that as a sample to test, not a guarantee of comfort. A loose stone can press into the foot despite a smooth surface.
Test the assembly
Make a sample area using the proposed depth, base, and edging. Walk on it barefoot, stand, turn, and test it wet. Compare hot sunny conditions with shade. Surface color and exposure affect temperature.
Drainage, soil separation, weed management, containment, and accessible transitions belong to the design. A loose layer that is too deep can be difficult to walk through; a thin layer can expose the base.
Quantity arithmetic
For the 360 sq ft area:
| Illustrative depth | Geometric volume |
|---|---|
| 2 inches | 60 cu ft = 2.22 cu yd |
| 3 inches | 90 cu ft = 3.33 cu yd |
These are volume calculations, not a selected installation depth. Allowance for compaction, settlement, waste, and supplier measurement must be established. Convert to weight using the supplier’s bulk density.
Decisions still open
The actual aggregate, base, edging, drainage detail, and installation quote remain unselected. Earlier cost estimates are historical, not current bids.
